A Historical Civil War Romance Novel

Paul R. Meredith

Short synopsis:

This story is of romance during the American Civil War. It tells the story of the life of Ephraim White, a Union northerner from West Virginia who crossed over into the southern Confederate state of Virginia to marry a reluctant young southern girl named Julia Spencer. Ephraim had won the right to marry her in a showdown poker game with her father two years before when she was just twelve years old.
Ephraim is a land surveyor by trade and a gambler by choice. He has worked hard to earn and save all he could, plus he also has won money through gambling, enough to buy a small plantation in the Richmond area before he marries the young girl who has just turned fourteen.         After marriage Ephraim eventually becomes a spy for both sides (a double agent) during the Civil War. The spying could get him hanged by either side if he were to be discovered.
The story begins as Ephraim is crossing over the state line into Virginia and details Ephraim’s life through the remainder of the Civil War and well beyond while encompassing many, many harrowing wartime experiences. Ephraim’s love life suddenly becomes quite complicated when he meets a young red-headed Irish woman named Gina Ellsworth.

Joanna's Sin

Joanna's Sin is a unique mystery adventure/romance novel in that it deals with a topic not seen in most stories of mystery, love, and compassion. That topic is not revealed until the very end of the story, but the plot and sub-plots leading there will keep the reader on edge until they finally get it. Plus the story setting takes place where one might least expect it, in a 55-plus coastal retirement community. The reader will really want to explore this concept in telling a love story, a compelling story between older adults.

Here is a brief example of what you will find in the story:

In the quiet coastal community of Beaver Creek, a fifty-five plus gated community located inside a larger city OF Ormond Beach in Central Eastern Florida, residents awoke to the noisy confusion of police car, fire truck and ambulance sirens that surrounded the discovery of a woman’s dead body floating in one of the three small lakes inside the community. Life suddenly changed for more than six hundred residents. Instead of the peace and quiet of casual retirement living just off the Atlantic Ocean, they were now aware of the potential of a killer living among them. Following the news of the murder of yet a second woman of Beaver Creek, a beloved woman by the name of Sara James, the nerves of the residents of Beaver Creek were really set on edge. Even though the residents clamored for an arrest, it seemed the police were not doing enough to attempt to solve the two crimes. Some were suspicious the police had dropped the investigation altogether.

A mysterious woman by the name of Joanna Simpson moved into the community a bit later, a woman from California who was hell-bent on finding and bringing to justice the murderer of her sister, Sara James. She kept her identity secret from all but one close confidant. Once she felt she knew who it was that killed her sister, Joanna hatched a plan to deliver her brand of justice to that person. What she had to do to get close enough to the person to serve him justice is the main plot of the story, a story that leads to a totally unexpected and shocking conclusion.
